We all have that family member or friend that is just a little less tech-savvy or has a more challenging time adopting new technology than the rest of us. The demographic that comes to mind the most is seniors. But, they may not be struggling as much as you think. According to the Pew Research Center, about 80% of Americans 55 and over are using the internet, and today’s 65-year-olds have spent much of their adult lives experiencing advances in technology firsthand.

Google recently did a study on senior consumer insights and found that most online seniors spend at least six hours a day online and own an average of five devices. With seniors’ digital savviness likely to only increase in the next few years, here are three ways you can help:

Keep them connected to what matters most – The pandemic has made a lot of seniors feel isolated. Help keep them connected to their community through video chats, tv streaming watch parties, and any other way they connect to the world.

Patience is a virtue - New technology is uncharted territory for seniors. With the advances that happen every day, be patient when helping seniors adopt new technology and take the time to help them feel comfortable.

Practice makes perfect- Show them how to use their devices and then let them try first hand. Some learners are better when they do something themselves instead of having someone else do it for them. This also helps when they’re on their own trying to use technology.
